Former Poly coach Howard Farer receives CIF distinguished honors

Howard "Howie" Farer first came to Poly as a classroom teacher. He then transitioned to the Physical Education Department, where he taught until he retired. Aside from PE, Howie has a great passion for tennis. He coached both boys and girls tennis teams during his tenure at Poly, with a total of 948 victories, seven CIF-SS titles in 16 appearances, and 14 CIF-SS academic team championships. Howie was a widely respected coach who placed character and integrity above winning and made sportsmanship a priority for his players. In 2013, the Southern California Tennis Association recognized him as Coach of the Year. Aside from his coaching title at Poly, Howie has been the Prep League boys and girls tennis commissioner and has served on the CIF tennis advisory committee, which he still does today.

Because of his many contributions, Howie is being awarded the CIF-SS Distinguished Service Award, which is presented for exemplary service and contribution to the CIF Southern Section. Nominations are considered for the following: high school administrator, CIF staff, CIF council member, or athletic coach who, over the years, has served or contributed directly to the CIF Southern Section through the management of playoff activities or by serving on special Southern Section committees. The Distinguished Service Award is given to individuals who have been of significant and long term service to the CIF Southern Section.

This award will be presented to him on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 11:30 a.m. at The Grand Conference Center. For more information or to purchase a ticket to attend, visit CIF-SS.
