Poly Athletics finishes big

Last Saturday marked the end of Poly Athletics for the 2017-18 school year, and the Panthers went out with a bang! The day started with the baseball team playing Moreno Valley High School in the 2018 CIF-SS Division 6 championship game. The two teams arrived at the UC Riverside baseball field with fans in tow. It was a slow start to the game: Poly scored first, putting one run on the board in the second inning, and the score held there for the next two innings. Poly was able to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth. It was the sixth inning when things got interesting. The Panthers were able to get in a few hits, and the Vikings had a few errors. By the end of the inning, Poly opened the lead to 6-0 as they headed into the final inning. The Vikings' fighting spirit had not gone out yet, and they put up one run on the board. A pop fly caught in right field sealed the game with the Panthers walking away with the 2018 CIF Division 6 championship with a final score of 6-1.

The day finished with senior Xian Shively representing Poly in 3200m race of the 2018 State Meet up in Clovis. Shively’s event was not scheduled until 9:20 p.m., and he proved the late start was no obstacle. He qualified for state after his time finished in the top 14 in the state during the Masters Meet. Even at this final race, Shively showed that he still had room to improve. He finished 11th with a new personal record time of 9.07.11, breaking the school record once again.

Congratulations to this spring’s finishers!
