Position: Middle and Upper School learning specialist
Polytechnic School is looking for an energetic and dynamic educator who, above all, loves working with Middle and Upper School students and values and affirms the unique contributions of each child in the school community. Our next learning specialist should be well versed in current educational theory and should thrive in translating that into practice to support all students and their learning especially those with learning differences.
As a member of the Middle and Upper School, the learning specialist’s role is to partner with our student-centered faculty and lead the student support process for identifying, monitoring, and guiding students who learn differently; support students with a variety of learning styles by providing intervention and remediation; support teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs within the classroom; work with parents, students, and outside professionals in order to better support students with learning differences. He or she will join a community who already values and appreciates the work of and partners well with a learning specialist.
Special responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: the development of a solid knowledge base of the curriculum; assisting teachers in the classroom to help adjust, accommodate, and enrich curricular approaches and improve pedagogy; teaming with teachers to devise skillful classroom management practices (routines and procedures) to ensure a productive learning environment; using formative and summative assessments and document student progress and achievement; and educating faculty and parents on topics relevant to learning differences.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Individual student support;
- Participate as a member of the Middle and Upper School support teams;
- Implementation, documentation, and communication of accommodations;
- Scheduling, feedback, and analysis of ERBs for sixth through eighth grades;
- Implementing, coordinating, and communicating temporary accommodations with concussions;
- Manage accommodations and submit documentation for ISEEs, APs, ACTs, and SATs;
- Peer tutoring coordination;
- Manage Upper School mid-year and final exam accommodations.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three to five years of working at the Middle and/or Upper School level. Candidates with specialized credentials that include a master’s degree in special education, educational therapy, or reading specialist are preferred. The ideal candidate will be well organized and thoroughly versed in meeting student needs across the development spectrum and in providing targeted instruction to students with learning differences. A specialized background in learning differences, interpreting and applying complex educational plans, as well as aligning and monitoring the effectiveness of interventions and alternative strategies to maximize learning for students are required skills for this position. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a willingness to learn and collaborate with other adults on campus. Mindful that learning is a lifelong process, applicants should be committed to continued professional growth.

Physical requirements and work environment
- Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, as well as a diverse array of contacts;
- Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time;
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds;
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
