Back to the Big Screen and the Polytechnic School community welcomes back alum Jade Richard-Craven ’11, screenwriter and co-executive producer of the 2023 film, Gridiron Grind, for a special theatrical screening in our very own Garland Theater. Jade Richard-Craven is a Pasadena, CA native.

As a Black Queer woman, she set her mind on writing and producing television shows and films for diverse audiences from a young age. Jade was a Poly lifer, graduating in the class of 2011. During her time at Poly, she participated in varsity football, basketball, and track and field. Her basketball team won a CIF championship, which heavily influenced the football championship storyline in Gridiron Grind. Jade fondly remembers writing her first screenplay in an AP English class and producing and directing her first short films as a student at Poly.

Jade went on to major in Visual Media Studies and English at Duke University. Her television assistant credits include Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage starring Mahershala Ali and Amazon's Golden Globe-winning Goliath starring Billy Bob Thornton. After that, Jade worked extensively in development where she learned the ins and outs of pitching and script coverage under Cheo Hodari Coker's Overall Amazon Deal. This past June, Jade's feature writing and co-executive producing debut, Gridiron Grind, was released on Tubi to great success. Fox and Tubi hosted the first Tubi Original screening on the Fox Lot to celebrate Pride month.

Gridiron Grind ranked 20th on IMDb's Staff Picks for 2023 as the only Tubi Original film to make the list. This timely coming-of-age story is based on her true experience playing high school tackle football at Poly as the only girl on the boys team. Jade has also appeared on CreepTime The Podcast and Locatora Radio on Spotify and iHeartRadio to speak on storytelling. With her future projects, Jade will continue to tackle taboo subjects as she sees authentic media representation as integral to our country's hope for an equitable future.

Back to the Big Screen, a monthly screening series, provides the opportunity for the greater Poly community to experience a selection of cinematic titles in a big screen format in our very own Garland Theater over the course of the academic year. This chance to revisit titles that we may have never seen on the big screen will encompass the screening of a select film of relevance followed by moderated discussion among those in attendance at each event.
